Global spending on semiconducters, which are used in the production of LED devices, is expected to grow by 76.1 per cent on 2009's figures.

This is according to Gartner, which stated that sales are likely to increase from $16.7 billion (£11 billion) to $29.4 billion in 2010.

However, it is thought that there could be a slight downturn in the second quarter of the year, before figures head upwards as 2011 approaches.

The company believes that this increase in the amount of money enterprises are spending on equipment has resulted in the "dramatic" recovery of the semiconductor industry.

Jim Walker, research vice-president at Gartner, said: "Spending by the memory and foundry markets, along with the advancement to new technology nodes, will drive the semiconductor equipment segment in the first half of 2010."

This comes after the organisation predicted that sales of touchscreen mobile devices will increase by 97 per cent in 2010, amounting to more than 362.7 million units.
