LED lights could save American homeowners $120bn

A government report has said that homeowners in the US could be saving billions of dollars by switching to LED lights.

The report by the US Department of Energy believes Americans could save $120 billion (£78 billion) in energy bills over the next 20 years.

As well as money off energy bills, the amount of energy saved would be approximately 1,488 terawatt hours if the more energy efficient LEDs were adopted across the country.

Smartplanet compared the change to 24 power stations' worth of electricity being saved. It also says, if the US's 300 million people switched to LED lights, it could mean 246 million metric tons of carbon not being emitted into the atmosphere.

The message seems to have been received by a number of five-star London hotels.

A report by the Times showed that many new hotels wanted to lower their carbon footprint and part of that strategy involved the use of LED lighting in hotel suites.
