Toshiba to stop manufacture of incandescent bulbs to opt for LED

Japanese electronics manufacturer Toshiba is to end production of traditional incandescent light bulbs in favour of producing LED lighting.

One of the most recognisable brands in the world, Toshiba makes electrical appliances across the spectrum, including televisions and computers.

It is a significant step by one of the big global players in electronics that demonstrates the market for this new kind of lighting.

However, its bosses have decided that, 120 years after it became the first manufacturer in Japan to make incandescent bulbs, its future lies with LED lighting.

This follows a US Department of Energy report that suggested that the country's homeowners could save around $120 billion (£78 billion) on energy bills if every homeowner changed their light bulbs to LED.

In addition, some cities in Europe are already using the updated technology in their street lighting. The Spanish city of Valencia has already installed more than 1,000 LED street lights, with more to come.

Jerez in southern Spain is set to install more than 20,000 new light bulbs.
