LEDs 'a hot topic' in Vienna

The role of LEDs in the future of energy-efficient lighting solutions was a hot topic for delegates at the CIE (International Commission on Illumination) 2010 conference in Vienna.

LED technology offers a new era in energy-efficient lighting solutions and could replace current energy-saving lamps and the conventional bulb, according to international lighting consultant professor Wout van Bommel.

The conference, which ran from March 14th to March 17th, focused on developing more energy-efficient lighting solutions without losing brightness and quality.

Proposals were put forward for harnessing daylight and unleashing new technologies already available in order to improve global electricity consumption.

But LEDs stole the show, offering environmental benefits for the future.

Professor Bommel said: "LEDs will completely replace conventional light bulbs.

"They are still fairly expensive, but significantly more effective than alternative lighting technologies."

The CIE, which takes its acronym from its French name the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage, dedicates itself to the sharing of information across the globe in developing and improving lighting, colour and vision, photobiology and image technology.
