Several optoelectronics companies have joined forces to give a live demonstration of 100-gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interoperability at this year's OFC Conference in San Diego.

Juniper Networks, Infinera, Finisar and Opnext have developed a way to pass 100 GigE traffic between a router and an optical transport system using two different CFP optical transceivers.

The development is a significant step in making 100 GigE services widely available at a cost-effective rate, improving companies' communications systems and allowing greater distribution of 100 GigE networking equipment.

This will benefit companies as bandwidth demands increase to accommodate video and cloud computing.

These companies' products appeared to be well ahead of their competitors.

In particular, the Juniper Networks T1600 is the only core router currently providing 100 Gpbs of slot capacity, which is needed to support 100 GigE.

Stefan Dyckerhoff, executive vice-president of Juniper Networks, said: "100 GigE will be key to improving the economics and user experience of the next generation of networking technology."

The demonstration can be seen at the Infinera Express mobile stand at the OFC until March 25th, alongside other innovative optoelectronic developments including Zarlink's latest compact cabling product, ZOE.
