Ambient light sensors 'are cutting carbon'

Ambient light sensors are helping in the battle to cut carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

Sensors developed by Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (TAOS) are able to adjust the brightness of screen-based products such as HDTVs, mobile phones and computers to appropriate levels based on ambient light conditions.

Additionally, proximity sensors developed by TAOS can automatically turn on or off display-based technology when it detects the presence or absence of a person.

Kirk Laney, the president and CEO of TAOS, said that it was vital to implement such technologies to help reduce carbon emissions.

Mr Laney commented: "It is important that we recognise that there are various technologies available to us which provide a means to reduce carbon emissions globally and we need to encourage their implementation."

Established in 1998, TAOS is based in Plano, Texas and was named in 29th place in the top 100 fastest growing private companies in Dallas Metroplex in 2009.
