An LED manufacturer from the US is claiming to have produced a product that can deliver light output similar to a 60 W incandescent bulb.

Cree's XLamp XM lighting class LED platform can offer record-breaking efficiency of 160 lumens per watt at 350 mA, according to a company press release.

In the eyes of the firm's chairman and chief executive Chuck Swoboda, this product is a continuation of its ability to research and develop advances into quality consumer products.

He added: "We continue to set the pace for LED performance, establishing new benchmarks that make you wonder why anyone would consider last-century's energy-wasting technology."

It is clear that many major electronics companies are incorporating diodes into design for high-standard highly efficient light bulbs.

Manufacturers such as Toshiba have made a clear effort to switch from incandescent production to LED lighting.

Samples of the new lighting platform are already available with a full commercial release set for this autumn.
