Optoelectronics manufacturer increases touch panel production

A Taiwanese-based optoelectronics firm is to expand production of touch panels in the second quarter of 2010.

Young Fast Optoelectronics, which specialises in the manufacture of small to medium-sized products in the sector, is to make more ITO film-based capacitive touch panels as its Huizhou plant in southern China.

Digitimes reports that the company plans to "ramp up production" at its Vietnam plant over the next three months.

The company reportedly says that previous capacity expansion at the facility in China assisted in boosting capacitive touch panels' share of total revenue during the first quarter of 2010, whereas revenue from frameless resistive products (touch lens) decreased over the same period.

Industry observers told the publication that touch panels would "continue to take up market share in 2010" and that capacitive touch panels could yet become the "mainstream" for the sector in the near future.

However, they warned that Young Fast faced "strong competition" from peers in the Taiwanese optoelectronics industry and noted that its ITO film-based products are already competing against ITO glass-based rivals.
