LED technology dominated the attention of visitors to the Light and Building trade show in Frankfurt, according to one journalist and attendee.

Gordon Routledge told readers of Electronics Weekly that he struggled to find any booths not featuring products which incorporate the technology.

Mr Routledge commented that the larger original equipment manufacturers have channelled much of their research and development activity into nurturing marketable offerings in the sector.

Furthermore, he said that many industry experts expect LEDs to illuminate the majority of roads within five years.

As reported recently, a number of European cities have already made the transition to the lower energy luminaire.

He told readers that the sector had accelerated, with large OEMs "firmly on the LED hymn sheet".

"Now we're also seeing Far East vendors winning business in China and other parts of the Far East, with more LED street lights in China than anywhere else," he added.

Among the companies promoting its innovation was Toshiba which recently announced that it was to ditch production of incandescent blubs in order to focus on this growing industry.
