Electronic sensors are set to make tyres "intelligent", according to a newspaper report.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems are set to become standard for cars in Europe by 2012.

The Irish Independent reports that the technology, which is fairly common on executive vehicles, will enhance its contribution to driving dynamics.

Previously, the car component relied on its "mechanical and physical" elements to aid the driving experience.

The technology transmits information to the engine control unit, informing the person behind the wheel if there are any problems. It also informs other vehicle electronics systems such as anti-lock braking.

Once the regulations are introduced for all vehicles, every driver should be able to find out information such as temperature, pressure and tread depth in tyres.

Pistonheads reports that Pirelli is already addressing this issue and is releasing a "Cyber Tyre" in 2013.

Schrader Electronics, which is producing the component for Pirelli, believes that it will make a "significant contribution" to both road safety and fuel efficiency.
