&lt;span&gt;An American manufacturer has announced that two universities have signed up to its initiative to get campuses to incorporate the technology and save energy.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Cree, the North Carolina-based firm that specialises in production of lighting applications, said that Universities at Shady Grove (USG) has joined its list of academic institutions in the LED University programme.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Indeed, USG opened a car park lit by diodes as it looks to not only save energy but also help protect the environment and reduce out goings, Semiconductor Today reports.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Last week, the University of Western Ontario in Canada signed up to the initiative and believes its range of planned installations, to be put in place this year, could save $750,000 (£489,000) in power and maintenance costs over the next decade.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;According to the same publication, 16 institutions are involved in the project including Tianjin Polytechnic University in China.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;In addition to its lighting operations, Cree offers semiconductor solutions for wireless and power applications.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=19755589"&gt;&lt;img alt="ADNFCR-1785-ID-19755589-ADNFCR" src="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=19755589" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div style="clear:both;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
