A Taiwanese optoelectronics company has said that it aims to ship 55 million backlight units this year.

Radiant Optoelectronics, which supplies modules for notebook PCs, would increase its shipments by 55 per cent year-on-year if it meets that target.

The company's chairman Wang Pan-jen stated that more of its business in the first quarter came from Korean customers, most notably global consumer electronics brands Samsung and LG.

Furthermore, he suggested that the second quarter could see Radiant reach record highs for monthly revenues, Taiwan Economic News reported.

The optoelectronics firm registered an increase in monthly revenues of 2.5 per cent quarter-on-quarter to NT$9.72 billion (£201,000).

While notebook PC backlights made up 99.6 per cent of Radiant's business during the first three months of the year, it is expected that LED TV backlights will make up a bigger proportion going forward.

This follows Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing chairman Morris Chang who reaffirmed his belief that consumer electronic demand would drive up demand for component companies.
