Blue-violet laser diode unveiled by Renesas

A Japanese electronics firm has unveiled its first blue-violet semiconductor laser diode that enables high power output.

The Renesas Electronics Corporation has released the NV4A61MF, which has a wavelength of 405nm and is ideal for Blu-ray disco recording thanks to an optical waveguide that substantially increases the incorporation of the laser diode into the semiconductor.

The technology offers optical power outlet of 350 mW and reduce laser noise that occurs during playback to less than one-third of the companys other offerings.

Mass production of the device is scheduled to begin in August  though samples are currently available  and is estimated to reach one million units per month by the second quarter of 2011.

Renesas Electronics Corporation, which is one of the worlds leading suppliers of microcontrollers, also disclosed that it will expand its line-up of blue violet laser diodes later this year with the release of the next 420 Mw semiconductor for dual layer 12x Blu-ray recording.

The company also specialises in the development of analogue and power devices, as well as system LSI devices.
