Asia's first LED chip production plant opens

An LED manufacturer has opened a production plant in Malaysia that extends its facilities across two continents.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, which specialises in components for lighting equipment, suggested that it has become the first LED producer to manufacture chips in both Europe and south-east Asia.

The 35,000 square metre water fabrication plant in Penang will produce equipment for light emitting diodes, which many industry experts consider will become the light source of the future.

Alongside its latest factory in Regensburg, Germany, this facility will double its chip production capacities annually.

Dr Ruediger Mueller, chief executive of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, explained why the company chose to open the facility in the south-east Asian country.

He said: Cost, and more so the talented and experienced workforces are all in favour of Penang when it comes to choosing the site for our new facility.

But it was also the long-term partnership with the Malaysian authorities that made it the top choice.

OSRAM considers itself as the third largest LED manufacturer in terms of international sales behind Nichia and Cree.
