LED tubes are predicted to become the standard replacement for equivalent fluorescent lighting, according to a survey of industry professionals.

Many manufacturers of incandescent bulbs, such as Toshiba, have taken steps to switch to diode-based production.

However, a poll of industry peers and blog readers of Software Advice revealed that 60 per cent believe LED tubes will be the standard replacement for fluorescent products in years to come.

To date, just 29 per cent of participants said they have already switched to diode lighting with many still using other traditional means of illumination.

Of the 71 per cent who did not, the publication highlighted high upfront costs and "lower strength of light" as a reason for not making the switch.

Furthermore, those surveyed appeared to be unsure as to whether LED was set for mainstream usage, with 43 per cent believing the new technology was ready for "prime time" compared with 46 per cent suggesting it was not and 11 per cent being unsure.
