Super-capacitor batteries could make laptops lighter for users while delivering low power to maintain performance for most tasks.

Global chip and component manufacturer Intel's European Research conference explored how the technology can improve and its vice-president Dr Wen-Hann Wang remarked that energy cells are bigger at the moment due to the need for dealing with demanding applications such as 3D rendering, PC Pro reports.

However, the company announced its intention to introduce super-capacitor batteries that could consistently deliver low power of approximately 10 watts and should a notebook require less energy, the excess may be could be placed in reserve for more sapping tasks.

Dr Wang said that the technology could open "a lot of possibilities" for consumers with the choice of a smaller, lighter option or longer-lasting cell.

Intel is the largest manufacturer of semiconductors in the world and is renowned for its production of processors for laptop and desktop computers.
