Taiwan govt commits to LED street lighting

The Taiwanese government is the latest authority to commit to using LED street lights across the country.

In recent months, cities across the world, including the Spanish port of Valencia and Seattle in the north-western United States, have installed diode-based luminaires on their public highways.

According to Taiwan Economic News, the national government is to facilitate the substitution of incandescent street lights with LED bulbs, with a total of 1.3 million lampposts to use the technology.

The publication reports that the programme could bring opportunities for domestic manufacturers worth around NT10 billion (£217 million), but implied that the project may "aggravate the shortage in the supply of LED chips".

Already, the Taiwanese government has vowed to convert all traffic lights across the island to diode lighting and pointed to the country's vigorous development in this industry, as it is ranked top of the world in terms of output in the sector.
