A US semiconductor firm has unveiled a new integrated passive device (IPD) technology at an industry convention.

ON Semiconductor unveiled an enhanced version of its HighQ copper on silicon IPD process to delegates at the International Microwave Symposium, which runs until Friday (May 28th).

The manufacturer claims its new innovation, featuring a second copper layer to boost inductor performance, will allow its customers more flexibility and precise design for radio frequency systems in portable electronics equipment.

It believes the HighQ IPD2's ability to integrate passive devices "on a cost-effective, small-size platform" could bring designers a "valuable solution" when creating small battery-powered products.

Rick Whitcomb, senior director of the company's Custom Foundry Division, said that by giving a wealth of design tools to this process, customers may be able to "make the transition from less effective technologies" in very little time and with confidence.

ON Semiconductor also supplies solutions to a variety of industries, including military, aerospace and medical clients.
