Consumer electronics demand 'causing LED shortage'

New research has indicated that LED manufacturers may struggle to meet the demand for components to be used in consumer appliances such as televisions, desktop monitors and mobile computers.

Data from iSuppli revealed that shipments of the parts will reach 276.7 million units during this year, which represents an increase of 134.9 per cent from the 2009 figure [of] 117.8 million units.

The findings also show that LED backlights are set to be used in 43.1 per cent of all large-sized LCD panels, which will mainly be used for new television sets, including 3D models recently unveiled by a number of the world's renowned brands, such as Samsung and LG.

Shipments of the diode-based technology are forecast to increase to 477.6 million units next year and to 817.9 million by 2014, with such components making up 87.7 per cent of the market.

According to iSuppli, this rapid rise in forecasts for the future is likely to put constraints on LED production.

The research company describes its role as being able to help "clients improve performance in the electronics value chain".
