Worldwide semiconductor monthly sales increased by 2.2 per cent in April, according to new figures.

Data from the Semiconductor Industry Association's (SIA's) Global Sales Report revealed that companies in the sector generated $23.6 billion (£15.9 billion) compared with $23.1 billion in March.

Furthermore, the research showed that semiconductor sales revenue increased by 50.4 per cent on the same stage last year

SIA president George Scalise said the figures represented a healthy rate of growth and suggested the year-on-year figures were "unusually high", but are a reflection of the "trough of the recession" in the early part of 2009.

He indicated that adoption of 3G wireless technologies by consumers and a recovery in terms of demand from the automotive, industrial and enterprise sectors were key contributors to the positive data.

The SIA considers itself to be the voice for the US semiconductor industry, which is the country's second largest exporter.
