Semiconductor brands join forces on SoCs

Five global semiconductor firms have joined forces to push for the use of open source software on system-on-chips.

ARM, Freescale, IBM, Samsung, Texas Instruments and ST-Ericsson have come together to form an organisation called Linaro, which will look to encourage development of open source projects to be used in applications like Google's Android.

The network of semiconductor firms hopes to improve both developer and user experiences on connected devices and intends to deliver results in the latter part of this year.

Linaro executive officer Tom Lantzsch suggested that the growth of technology in this area is evident in the existence of internet-based always-connected mobile and consumer devices.

"Linaro will help accelerate this trend by increasing investment in key open source projects and providing industry alignment with the community to deliver the best Linux-based products," he said.

The newly-formed organisation is hoping to utilise the latest features of ARM-based processors in order to provide improved performance while using less power.
