Optoelectronics firm opens new Chinese plant

A new optoelectronics plant, which has opened in China, looks set to increase a Taiwanese company's LED capacity to 500 million units and increase the making of laptop keyboard components by 150 per cent.

Taiwan Economic News reports that Lite-On Technology's new facility in Changzhou, in China's Jiangsu province, will focus on the production of power supply systems and solar cell products as well as diodes.

In addition, the company also said the plant will be its base for the manufacturing of green-energy applications, while also being the firm's third factory to make LEDs to be used in TVs, mobile phones, signage luminaires and general lighting equipment.

Lite-On Technology merged with Silitek, GVC and Lite-On Electronics in 2002, something the company described as a milestone in Taiwan's equity market.

By 2007, the combined organisation achieved global sales revenues of NT 166.1 billion (£3.5 billion), while it claims that its plan going forward is to improve profitability through a new product portfolio strategy.
