GE water system for "most advanced" semiconductor plant

Global Foundries new semiconductor manufacturing plant has been branded the world's "most advanced" and will include a new water purification system supplied by General Electric (GE).

The $4.6 billion (£3.1 billion) facility, which will produce computer chips, is still under construction at the Luther Forest Technology Campus, north of Albany in New York state and will incorporate GE's ultrapure system.

It will be completed and ready for business in 2012 and the semiconductor plant is currently the largest economic development project happening in the US.

Norm Armour, vice-president and general manager of the Fab 8 facility, as it will be known, said that long-term delivery of ultrapure water is integral to a successful operation.

"We chose GE based on its extensive experience and ability to provide ongoing reliable technical and field support," he said.

GE also produces consumer electronics appliances, runs a financial services business called GE Capital and owns media network NBC Universal.
