An LED lighting manufacturer from the north of England is hoping to capitalise on the growing desire for energy-efficient consumer lighting.

Cumbrian-based firm Forge Europa has been working closely with a team of scientists from Cambridge University to develop diode-based bulbs that last for 100,000 hours and reduce power consumption in UK homes, the Financial Times reports.

Professor Colin Humphreys, who led the research, indicated that should LED lighting be introduced across the country then it could eliminate the need for eight power stations.

The publication noted that the North West Development Agency has highlighted Forge Europa as one of 15 companies in Cumbria, with a combined turnover of £51 million, "as a critical growth point".

Stuart Klosinski of Furness Enterprise feels the UK government's idea of energy-efficiency is not focused enough as other economies such as the US and South Korea.

Forge Europa says its philosophy is to apply "best practice design techniques to deliver a tested and proven product that provides optimal performance in its operational environment".
