Popular semiconductor devices retailed to consumers are seeing an increase in demand for wireless connectivity thanks to the prevalence of mobilised tablets, reports iSuppli.

The market analyst explains that a broad range of semiconductor devices are now insinuating themselves into "every aspect of the human condition".

Among them are portable media players, e-readers, netbooks and slate tablets.

These complement the existing role of handsets as the main driving force and primary application of wireless technology in consumer electronics.

In its report, iSuppli notes the near-exponential growth of wireless wide area network device numbers in circulation.

Having neared 100 million during 2010, the total is expected to surpass that threshold during the coming year.

By 2012 it is expected to have doubled to 200 million, almost doubling once again by 2014 to near 400 million units in total.

In its consumer electronics research strand, iSuppli says that "ferociously powerful" computers, innovative devices and broadband applications are presenting tremendous opportunities for growth to equipment manufacturers.
