The success of three-dimensional television (3DTV) - and of the semiconductors that enable it to work - could depend on the creation of premium pay-per-view content for the audience.

Parks Associates, an international research firm, explains that it found almost half of American households would pay for 3D content to watch on their 3DTV.

This suggests that premium content could play a greater role in driving success in the market than one-off events, the analyst proposes.

Pietro Macchiarella, research analyst at Parks Associates, says: "By 2014, 80 per cent of the TVs sold in the US will be 3D-ready."

This trend could in turn drive sales of semiconductors used in the television sets themselves and in the associated equipment, such as active shutter glasses, required to view 3DTV.

Rothman Research recently noted that the second-quarter success of semiconductors in 2010 was driven by their inclusion in a number of product categories - such as smartphones and netbooks - that grew in popularity during the quarter.
