Semiconductors are currently one of the seven trends driving data centre infrastructure towards a greener future, according to Pike Research.

The analyst lists seven trends "shaping the green data centre" at present in its new report on the issue of eco-friendliness in server environments.

Chief among these is "taming Moore's Law", relating to the famous principle behind the rate of development of semiconductors.

Moore's Law anticipates that the processing power of a chip of the same size will double every 18 months to two years, thanks to miniaturisation.

It is just one of the issues that Pike Research suggests is behind the transition towards a greener data centre in the years to come.

Eric Woods, industry analyst with the research firm, says: "Cost of energy has seldom been a concern for IT departments in the past."

"But as data centre energy costs become more visible, the financial benefits of moving to a greener mode of operation are being recognised," he adds.
