Transceivers manufactured at the 40 nm scale by Solarflare are enabling higher density networking switches to be produced, the company reports.

Solarflare Communications says it is "leading the industry transition to the next silicon process node".

This is seeing highly dense switches produced using 40 nm semiconductor technology by a number of original equipment manufacturers.

Russell Stern, chief executive officer of Solarflare, says: "We have achieved the power, density, performance and cost required to accelerate the mass adoption of ten-gigabit Ethernet."

The SFT9104 transceiver in particular enables quad-port adapters and up to 96 ports in a single rack unit, the company adds.

Part of the 10Xpress product line, the transceivers allow up to four configurations of connector cables.

They provide reliable, repeatable results, Solarflare adds, with transmission of up to 100 metres along Category 6A and Category 7 cables, 55 metres on Category 6 cables and 45 metres along Category 5e connections.
