HD light sensors could dominate market by 2014

The coming four years could see high-definition (HD) light sensors account for the majority of the market in networked video cameras.

Predictions from IMS Research anticipate widespread uptake of HD cameras and megapixel resolutions, which could drive the market for the relevant light sensors used in their construction.

The analyst notes that networked surveillance is emerging in two formats - including an analogue camera attached to a digital video recorder with its own Ethernet connection.

Alternatively, digital video cameras with in-built network connectivity offer a pure approach to communicating the information that they obtain.

Looking ahead to 2014, the research firm expects the latter to prove more popular by a factor of six.

"Many large and well-known vendors of video surveillance equipment have already invested heavily in developing and marketing network security cameras," notes research analyst Gary Wong.

In mid-August, IMS Research predicted that the total number of internet-active devices in existence would surpass five billion before the end of the month.
