Microsoft's new Kinect motion sensor system for the Xbox has been explained.

Full specifications for the design of the product have been revealed by Play and it showed that the two cameras within the device have resolutions of 320 x 240 and 640 x 480, with the sensors picking up 20 skeletal points of movement on each player.

As a result, while the cameras can track up to six players, only two can be active at any one time, meaning mad-cap multiplayer action might be something for the next-generation of Kinect users and is not really viable with this incarnation of the device.

Elsewhere, the Optoelectronics, Sensors and Discretes report by IC Insight recently showed that 2009 saw the worst decline in the sensor market since 2001.

However, with a projected 31 per cent increase in 2010 forecast, this year is set to be a bumper one for the industry.

Last year, the global market totalled $8.5 billion (£5.66 billion).
