US firm Fairchild Semiconductor has unveiled a new converter that it believes can be ideal for designers of mobile phones needing to support high capacity memory features.

The California-based manufacturer, which also specialises in developing solutions for power applications, stated there is "an emerging need" for such communications technology to be able to cope with larger SD flash cards and feels its FAN5362 is the answer.

It comes with a three MHz 500 mA buck regulator that uses "proprietary architecture with synchronous rectification" and is capable of delivering a peak efficiency of 94 per cent as well as performing reliably with light loads.

Furthermore, Fairchild indicated that its new converter offer optimised control designed specifically for low headroom operating.

The company also said the FAN5362 possesses the ability to "transition seamlessly into and out" of maximum duty cycles, thus preventing challenges for lithium-ion batteries as they approach the end of its voltage range.
