US manufacturer ON Semiconductor (ON) has released an offline LED driver that integrates power factor connection (PFC), signalling its intention to expand its range of luminaire solutions for vendors.

The new NCL30001 is said to eliminate the need for a PFC boost stage and reduces component count, which the firm believes is ideal for designs with energy requirements of between 40 w and 150 w.

According to the Arizona-based semiconductor company, this product is a low cost solution that "supports higher overall system efficiency in LED power supplies for applications such as LED-based street, low bay, wall packs and architectural lighting".

Christopher Warin, AC-DC business unit manager at the firm, suggested that with the growth of diode-based luminaires, there is a growing need for management devices and he indicated that the NCL30001 satisfies those demands.

Earlier this week, Kyodo News Agency reported that ON is finalising a deal to buy the semiconductor arm of electronics brand Sanyo as the Japanese organisation shifts its focus to solar energy products.
