Taiwan Semiconductor achieves record quarterly sales tally

Sales figures at the world's largest contract semiconductor chip maker in the second quarter of 2010 were the highest in the company's history.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) generated revenue for the three months to the end of June totalling NT105 billion (£2.17 billion), which beat the previous record of NT93.86 billion for the final quarter of 2007.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the result exceeded the estimates put forward by the firm for that period, which had been predicted to be between NT100 billion and NT102 billion.

As the publication noted, TSMC's performance is considered the "bellwether" for how the rest of the semiconductor industry will fare.

The firm also reported its best monthly sales for June, reaching NT36.33 billion.

TSMC was established in 1987 and suggests that its reputation has been built on "offering advanced wafer production processes and unparalleled manufacturing efficiency", with a capacity exceeding eight million eight-inch semiconductor wafers as of 2007.
