The number of PCs shipped worldwide increased by 21 per cent in the second quarter of 2010, it has been revealed.

According to Gartner, movements peaked at 82.9 million units, which marks a 20.7 per cent increase on the same period in 2009.

The news may have been even more welcome as the figures were slightly higher than Gartner's initial estimates for the period, as the organisation predicted shipments to increase by 19.3 per cent.

Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said: "End-user spending grew approximately 13 per cent in the second quarter. Average selling prices continue to decline, but at a much slower rate compared with the last two years."

While HP retained its position as the global leader in computer shipments, Acer was in second place, while Dell, Lenovo and ASUS completed the top five.

Meanwhile, Global and China's LED Industry Report 2009-10 recently revealed that the LED industry in China is likely to expand over the next two years.
