Semiconductor memory chips 'had a big quarter'

The second quarter of 2010 proved to be a successful one for sales of semiconductor memory chips, according to Rothman Research.

In an update on market conditions, the analyst explains that semiconductor memory chip sales are typically governed by the success of the products into which they are incorporated.

For example, in the second quarter, whole PC shipments were up by 22.4 per cent, much of which can be accounted for by the popularity of miniature notebook devices.

Smartphones, which also contain internal memory, grew year-on-year by 30 per cent in terms of unit sales, to reach sales of 60 million in the second quarter.

Orders for the Apple iPhone, which launched on June 24th, may have helped to drive this figure higher.

However, netbook sales continued to grow by 20 per cent during the three-month period despite posting consecutive sequential gains of 70 per cent in each of the previous quarters.
