The semiconductors used in touchscreen displays could be selected based on the preferences of independent software vendors (ISVs) in the years to come, according to a study from iSuppli.

In a new report, the market analyst explains that ISVs are expected to constitute a significant part of the development of new displays which support touchscreen capabilities and are suited to "compelling" applications.

Ease of touch is one issue that helps to determine which semiconductors and related technologies are used in products; such as the example of the Apple iPhone.

Here, projected capacitive technology was used, where a grid fitted with capacitors is used to detect when contact is made with the screen.

Director of monitor research Rhoda Alexander says: "With intense competition flaring up among the ISVs to develop the next must-have touch application, the battle will help to promote the sales of touchscreen devices."

The report adds that touchscreen interaction has long been envisioned by developers, but has proved difficult to achieve successfully in the consumer marketplace.
