Wireless network switches and routers are likely to outnumber direct cabled equivalents by four to one during 2010, according to a forecast from IMS Research.

The analyst expects to see 80 per cent of switches and routers to be wireless, making the market one of the furthest along in the transition to cable-free networking.

Other types of peripherals are less developed in this respect, with projectors lagging behind at less than three per cent of devices operating wirelessly.

"The proportion of wireless products varies significantly for different PC peripherals," notes market analyst Michael Liu.

However, he adds that all peripherals are demonstrating a trend towards cable-free operations.

IMS Research previously conceded that most wireless networking equipment has at least one wired connection available.

But the research firm argued that these links are typically less widely utilised than the 802.11 connection capable of serving games consoles, smartphones and notebook computers without the need for a cable attaching the two together.
