Taipei-based RAIDON, a specialist in small-scale RAID solutions, is offering a combination of the two main storage semiconductor types in its HyBrid RunneR iH2420 drive.

RAIDON was founded in 2000 and opened its USA branch office in 2009, with disk array specialist STARDOM spun off from the firm in 2002.

Its latest innovation combines solid-state and conventional disk storage semiconductors to offer the performance benefits of each in a single drive.

The iH2420 can accept a 2.5-inch solid-state disk (SSD) and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD), implementing RAID backup functionality across the two.

If the HDD has any extra capacity compared with the SSD, this is also made available as a non-RAID volume, so none of the storage potential is lost.

However, the SSD can be removed for mobile computing purposes and, once inserted back into the iH2420, will be replicated on to the HDD for backup protection and archiving.
