'Backside illumination' sensors grow thanks to iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is pushing forward growth in unit shipments of "backside illumination" sensors, reports iSuppli.

Abbreviated as BSI, the sensors are the technology that operates the new handset model's camera.

However, they are not the only imaging sensors to be seeing growth at present, as technology economies begin to recover from the recession.

Over this year, double-digit increases in units are predicted by iSuppli in imaging sensors as a whole.

In the BSI segment, percentage growth could reach into ten figures, with 2010 expected to see 33.4 million units shipped compared with almost none used in high-end smartphones in 2009.

By 2014, further increases in the region of 1,000 per cent are predicted as unit shipments top 300 million in iSuppli forecasts.

The analyst previously noted a further impact of Apple products on electronic components, with more compact graphics microprocessors finding favour in tablet computer systems including the company's iPad.
