'Minimum standards expected' of organic LEDs

Development of organic LEDs must reach minimum standards if they are to find the widespread uptake for which they hold the potential, predicts NanoMarkets.

The analyst is scheduled to publish its report OLED Lighting Materials Market Trends and Impact later this month.

In a preview of the study, the research firm explains that some developers are working hard on improving organic LEDs in line with end-users' expectations.

"We can already see intense efforts to develop white OLEDs for lighting applications as well as a strong interest in the indium-tin-oxide-less OLED light," NanoMarkets says.

But there is still work to be done to strike a balance between the price point expected by consumers and the minimum desired standards of colour and luminance required.

Organic LEDs have already had significant impact on the video display units market, thanks to their bright colours, good black tones and lack of a need to be backlit.
