Analyst Gartner predicts that wireless communications - both voice and data - will combine to create a trillion-dollar market by 2014.

Smartphones are predicted to drive the necessary sales to achieve this in developed markets, with laptops a complementary technology.

Both will be needed by information workers whose role relies on wireless communications for the coming years, says Gartner.

Alternatives including tablet PCs are expected to gain some ground, but the analyst does not believe they will become dominant.

Meanwhile, the concept of purchasing an application for a specific purpose could begin to blur as cloud computing moves into the software sphere.

Nick Jones, Gartner vice-president and distinguished analyst, says: "Applications will survive, but often as a component of a more complex end-to-end experience involving the cloud."

The suggestion aligns with Gartner's prediction of cloud computing as its number one technology likely to prove to be of strategic importance in the coming year.
