Social puzzlers, who display a preference for enlisting the assistance of their friends when solving problems, could find wireless communications allow them to do so.

According to Nintendo, there are six categories of 'puzzler', including those who act on intuition and those who prefer to think things through in detail.

Starter-finishers who like to get through a problem in one sitting contrast with 'dippers' who might take hours or even days to find a solution, in short bursts of activity.

But it is the third pair of categories - social and secret puzzlers - where wireless communications could play the greatest role.

Secret puzzlers may want to switch off the external connectivity of a device such as the Nintendo DS, as they reportedly do not want others to know what they are working on.

Meanwhile, social puzzlers could benefit from multiplayer logic-solving, rather than crowding over a newspaper crossword, as they prefer to get help from others.

Puzzling could literally be given a new dimension with the release of the Nintendo 3DS, which offers a three-dimensional experience without the need for gaming glasses.
