Power management ICs return to growth in 2010

New research has shown that a drop in power management integrated circuit (IC) sales will be reversed by the end of the year.

According to IMS Research, 2010 will see a 20 per cent growth in the market for the devices, which will be worth $12 billion (£7.6 billion) by the end of December, making up for the 14 per cent fall seen in 2009.

The report also showed that power management IC growth is set to continue across 2011 through to 2014, thanks to a predicted demand from manufacturers of lighting, PC notebooks, servers and cellular infrastructure.

Ryan Sanderson, senior market analyst for IMS Research's Power and Energy group, said: "Growth in the first half of 2010 was much stronger than many power semiconductor suppliers had predicted and has continued into the second half of the year."

The semiconductor industry is one of the most important technology markets and creates around $250 billion globally.
