Government G-cloud initiative could use private wireless communications solutions

As the UK government extends its cloud computing infrastructure under the G-cloud initiative, more private-sector wireless communications solutions could be installed in parliamentary departments nationwide.

Deputy government chief information officer Bill McCluggage explains that, simply because G-cloud is a public sector initiative, it does not mean that the government will not make use of innovations from private sector organisations.

Meanwhile, wireless communications solutions from different vendors may be selected by different departments depending on their individual needs, as there is no plan to create a single cloud infrastructure for the entire government.

"It's certainly not all data centres in the government," says Mr McCluggage. "It's not a single cloud pooling the work of all departments."

He adds that the UK government is more than willing to consider exploiting advances made by industry leading brands like Google, Amazon and Microsoft, if it appreciates the direction in which their technology is going.
