Research conducted in the US by analyst NPD Group indicates many people are failing to make use of the wireless communications capabilities of their printers.

Little over a quarter of the installed printer population in the US is utilising its wireless communications functionality, the research firm says.

This is in spite of the fact that the majority of printers sold in the country are now able to operate cordlessly.

Stephen Baker, vice-president of industry analysis at NPD Group, says: "Clearly the ability to print wirelessly from mobile phones and digital cameras exists, but today's wireless printers focus on the PC and miss opportunities to create a more complete wireless printing ecosystem for consumers."

An alternative to printing cordlessly from a digital camera is to dock it using PictBridge technology.

This is a standards-based industry development that means images stored within a digital camera's on-board memory can be printed directly without connecting to a PC.

PictBridge also permits minor edits such as red-eye reduction and cropping to be carried out, depending on the capabilities of the digital camera.
