IDC predicts widespread uptake of Kinect sensors

Further support has been given to the Xbox 360 Kinect system of sensors with the news that IDC expects it to outsell the Sony PlayStation 3 Move motion controller.

Both are predicted to give pause for thought to the ten million US users of Nintendo Wii MotionPlus controllers.

Kinect arguably represents a generational step forward in video gaming, as its use of visual sensors mean there is no joypad or remote to hold.

Instead, taking part simply requires players to stand in front of the gaming system and move, while microphones also allow their voice to be used.

Further players can join in by stepping into the field of vision of the console.

Lewis Ward, research manager for IDC's video game industry advisory service, says: "While it doesn't appear Kinect or Move will be this year's Tickle Me Elmo, millions of additional US households will be enjoying motion-based gaming this holiday season."
