A number of segments of the data centre market could be helping to drive demand for electrical connectors higher.

Figures from analyst International Data Corporation (IDC) indicate volume sales of 3.6 per cent in the data centre infrastructure market worldwide in the second quarter of 2010.

Electrical connectors could play an instrumental role in all areas of this - and may represent a core technology in some parts.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), for instance, rely on efficient connectors to make sure the maximum energy stored in their batteries is made available to the data centre if the mains supply fails.

Power distribution units (PDUs) are also a core technology in IDC's assessment of the sector; these similarly rely on efficient connectors to avoid negatively impacting on the performance of the network.

The Worldwide Quarterly Datacenter Infrastructure QView from IDC covers PDUs, UPS, racks, cabinets and cooling equipment to provide both vendor share and overall market size in each category.
