LED lights could lower holiday impact of decorations

Illuminated holiday decorations could have less of an energy impact if they were fitted with LED lights, it is suggested.

A report from research organisation WholeBuffalo reveals that a single string of lights can consume 750 kWh during the period from Thanksgiving to the end of December.

Company founder Lindsay Kavet says: "Across the country, holiday lights consume more energy in December than all the solar installations in the country produce over the entire year."

With LEDs, however, decorations can last up to 15 times as long without needing to have bulbs replaced, while also consuming as much as 80 per cent less energy when switched on.

Christmas Lights USA, an advice site dedicated to fairy lights, recently noted another important benefit of LED lights.

Unlike conventional bulbs, it may be possible for one or more LEDs to stop working without an entire string of lights switching off, the guidance provider explained.
