Wireless sensors in consumer electronics are helping home automation to make it into the mainstream, reports ABI Research.

The trends taking place globally at present include the inclusion of wireless communications capabilities in home energy meters by utility firms, the analyst notes.

ABI Research principal analyst Jonathan Collins says: "Wireless sensor networking communications are already making inroads into the home market and that uptake is set to gain momentum."

The driving force behind this acceleration is the movement of wireless sensors from the bespoke market to the central consumer electronics segment, he adds.

Once in place, wireless communications can allow sensors to coordinate other technology in the home - such as switching lights on and off, or adjusting thermostats.

The report comes from ABI Research's Wireless Sensor Networks Research Service, a channel focused to global and regional studies of how the technology is being used in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, North America and worldwide.

Posted by Sagar Jethani
