Wireless communications handsets 'are growing in demand'

People all over the world are increasingly looking for the best wireless communications handsets, according to a report from ABI Research.

The analyst explains that, despite perceptions in some parts that the market could be reaching a plateau, this is not the case.

"ABI Research estimates 390 million handsets and smartphones were shipped in Q4 2010, up 15.6 per cent year on year," says vice-president for forecasting Jake Saunders.

Some wireless communications manufacturers have refocused their efforts specifically on the top end of the market, the organisation notes, leading them to seemingly abandon their attempts to claim a larger share of the sector as a whole.

New introductions from developing economies like China and India are also predicted to play a role in the future of the industry as they bring on board low-cost handsets designed for the needs of their local populations.

Along with Brazil and Russia, India and China are two of the four so-called BRIC nations which are currently leading global economic growth.
